What equipment is required for VoIP?

It Depends on Your Situation

There are too many permutations and combination to go over each one in detail.

First and foremost, you will need a high speed internet connection, a modem and a computer with a sound card. If you already own a phone and wish to use it, you will need an analog phone adaptor (ATA). If you are using PC-to-PC VoIP, you will not need this adaptor, but you will need a headset with a microphone and a piece of software called softphone.

What about a router? You will need a router if you have a network (wired and/or wireless) in your home or office. The modem will plug into the router and the phone adaptor into the router. Your computer will also plug into the router on a different port. In the simplest of setups, some devices work as phones, adaptors and simple routers all in one. It will depend how intricate your setup is. In the case of these all in one units (called IP phones), the phone plugs into your modem and your computer plugs into the phone , which has an adaptor built-in.

Generally, you will not have to concern yourself too much with the equipment end of things as the VoIP service providers we recommend can guide you through what you will need for your partiuclar circumstances.
